In regards to the story itself and whether he was a good guy or bad guy on the good guys' side or the bad guys' side he was very good. It is literally inarguable that he was fighting on the side of the "light" to bring about Voldemort's downfall. Morally speaking, as many have pointed out, he is ultimately "grey".

According to the series, James bullied Snape during their time together at Hogwarts. As the series progresses, Snape's character becomes more layered and enigmatic. A central mystery is unravelled concerning his loyalties. Snape dies at the hands of Lord Voldemort in the seventh book , at which time his back story is revealed. Despite his attraction to the Dark Arts and Voldemort's ideology of wizard supremacy, Snape's love for Muggle-born Lily Evans , Harry's mother, eventually compelled him to defect from the Death Eaters. I'm not excusing his actions. But there are so many blink-and-you-miss it movie details involving Snape that really help argue his cause. Snape is all grey. You can't make him a devil: he died to save the wizarding world. Rightfully so. In case you're living under a rock, Snape was the double agent working for Dumbledore and Voldemort, whose loyalties ultimately lay with the former. However, he was horribly bitter and mean to Harry and his friends. A quick note: Alan Rickman knew that Snape was really good from the start. A lot of people took this as indication that Snape really was bad, but that isn't the case if you look at the shot! Snape knows from one tiny thing that Quirrell is bad news bears! If you look at the etymology of the words, you'll see he's both referencing Lily and his vow to protect Harry.
